Some bits of post-wedding business

First of all, thanks to everyone who attended, wished us well, and sent or brought something. Wow! We were really overwhelmed with the joy and generosity you showed us.

Second, a bunch of people asked about our vows. It was surprisingly difficult to find non-religious but meaningful vows. We looked at a bunch online; weirdly defensive atheist ones that said “without God or any other spiritual entity” several times, co-dependent phobic declarations and ones that were too cool to say anything very meaningful. We ended up writing our own, which I’m posting here for posterity. (Steve is our officiant’s name, in case you managed to miss that at the ceremony. He did a great job!)

***The questions to which we answered “I do” ***

Steve: Do you Deborah, take Ernie to be your lawfully wedded husband,
in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for richer or
poorer, so long as you both shall live?

Deborah: I do!

Steve: Do you Ernie, take Deborah to be your lawfully wedded wife, in
good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, for richer or
poorer, so long as you both shall live?

Ernie: I do!

Steve: Do you lovely people who are assembled here today, promise to
support Deborah and Ernie in their union, to offer support and comfort
when they need it and to accept support and comfort when you need it?

Lovely people: We will!

***Vows***

I take you, Ernie to be my husband.

I will continue to work with you to build a relationship founded on
honesty, respect, and trust.

I vow to honor and respect you for all that you are.

I will always support and encourage you.

I promise to challenge you, and to accept challenges from you.

I will join with you and our community to create a better world, where love and freedom are possible for all.

(Then Ernie said the same thing to me.)

Lastly, there are pictures available for perusing and/or purchasing prints of from our lovely photographer, Lindsay Metivier, please email us for the link to our gallery.

The Timing of Various Events or When is Stuff Happening?

We are really looking forward to seeing everybody in October! In addition to the wedding itself, there will be a few other opportunities to hang out with us and/or fellow wedding guests. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you have them!

Friday, October 12th from 11:00am – 4:00pm
Decorating at Spontaneous Celebrations! This will be very low-key. Some people will string lights and others can sit on their butts and say helpful things like, “Mmm, it could maybe be a little higher on that one side.” We’ll either bring some sandwiches or order a pizza at some point.

Friday, October 12th from 9:30pm – ???
Meet up with out of town friends at the Independent.
Ernie and I will probably just stop by for a bit, but you can stay as late as you want. Look for us on the right side, which is known as the “restaurant side.”

Saturday, October 13th from 5pm – 10:30pm
The actual wedding! Whoo! Arrive a few minutes before 5pm, so our photographer can get a nice natural light picture of your smiling face! The short ceremony will be directly followed by the reception/dinner.

Sunday, October 14th from Noon – 3:30pm
Open House Lunch at 584 Centre Street #1, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
Sungsook (Ernie’s mother) has graciously offered to host a post-wedding lunch at their rental house. The house is just a 15 minute walk from the wedding venue. There will likely be some dinner and/or dessert leftovers, Korean goodies, plus coffee and bagels.

After that you’re on your own for leaf-peeping, apple picking, or Great Pumpkin waiting!

A Couple of Things You May Enjoy While You’re Here

Most of the attractions in downtown Boston are pretty well-documented. The neighborhood we are getting married in is called Jamaica Plain, aka JP. It’s got lots of neat restaurants, unusual shops, plus plenty of indoor and outdoor stuff to do. If you’re looking for something to do during the day on Saturday (or Friday/Sunday) then we hope you’ll find these suggestions helpful. If you want suggestions or advice for other neighborhoods or types of activities, please email us. We’ve been living here forever and would be happy to help!

Restaurants

Bukhara — Delicious Indian food with a great lunch buffet. Tasty, loads of vegetarian options, plus cheap and filling too!

The Haven — Fresh, seasonal and Scottish! Filling food and lots of craft beers, open for lunch and dinner.

Bella Luna — Pizza, pasta and great salads. Very close to the venue, open for dinner plus Saturday brunch.

Ten Tables — Looking for a romantic, grown-up dinner? Ten Tables features the best of the season. Their tasting menu never disappoints.

Cafes and Ice Cream

City Feed — The Boylston location is a three minute walk from the venue. It’s a great place to get coffee or a sandwich, if you want to eat in the park.

Ula Cafe — Excellent coffee, soups, salads and sandwiches. This quirky place is a great spot to hole up with a laptop.

JP Licks — A small local ice cream chain with classics like Rum Raisin and Coffee Oreo, plus constantly changing seasonal flavors.

Indoor Activities

Aviary Gallery — Our friend Lindsay’s shop/gallery showcases local art in a strip of small locally owned boutiques. Aviary also sells unusual prints and handmade gifts. Lindsay also happens to be our wedding photographer, so be sure to say hi if you stop in!

Local shopping — Centre Street from Pond Street down to a block past the Loring Greenough House has a bunch of thrift and vintage shops, a hat boutique, antiques and plenty of places to snack if you get hungry while you’re out there.

Sam Adams Brewery — Learn a little history, see the big vats and taste some beers!

Outdoor Activities

Arnold Arboretum — It’s a giant outdoor tree museum! The visitor’s center has specific hours, but the Arboretum is open all the time. Plus, it’s free!

Forest Hills Cemetery — This beautiful garden cemetery serves as the final resting place for several famous poets and artists. It’s got huge old trees, lovely sculptures, plus a waterfall and fountain. It’s right by the Forest Hills stop on the orange line — just a few stops down from the wedding venue so you can easily pop down and back.

Franklin Park Zoo — Animals, birds, hot dogs and the smell of monkeys. All the things you’d expect from a zoo!

Jamaica Pond — Take a nice quiet walk around the pond or just relax. There are plenty of benches for people-watching and plenty of birds if you get sick of the people.

Accomodations in Boston

Here are some suggestions for folks who are coming in from out of town. Our wedding is taking place in a neighborhood of Boston known as Jamaica Plain. The venue (Spontaneous Celebrations) is just steps from the Stonybrook stop on the Orange Line. This is a compilation of places near the venue or just a few stops away on the Orange Line.

There’s a cute hotel right in Jamaica Plain just a 20 minute walk from the wedding site. The enVision Hotel has doubles for around $150 a night and some rooms overlook the lovely Jamaica Pond.

The Midtown is steps from the Massachusetts Avenue Orange Line stop. Rooms are around $120 a night and they have loads of tourist packages that include museum discounts.

The Taylor House is a Jamaica Plain “Bed and Breakfast” in a big old Victorian house just a 20 minute walk from the venue. Rates are around $160 – $190 per night.

You could also try Air BnB! Local residents rent out their apartments to visitors at rates that can be much less expensive than hotels. We suggest looking in the Brookline section which happens to include Jamaica Plain itself and nearby Mission Hill, which is a stop or two away on the Orange line.

Another good neighborhood to check is Back Bay especially if you’d like to see lots of downtown Boston while you’re here.

Boston has a great public transportation system! Hotels tend to get less expensive further from the city. If you stay near any MBTA “T” stop you will be able to get to the wedding venue. Parking will be very limited onsite so please contact us about the spaces we do have if public transportation will be difficult for you.
